SHINGLING AS A ROOFING MECHANIC

What do roofing mechanics do?
Roofing mechanics install shingles and other materials needed to protect the interior of homes, buildings, churches, and schools. Carpenter roofing mechanics install and maintain steep sloped roofs being covered with asphalt or wood shingling materials that encompass a very broad spectrum of shingle types and styles.

Roofing Insights.
Installing a roof can be complex, similar to putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Roofs are a system of overlapping layers that must be consistent and cannot leak into the interior below. Shingling mechanics always work outside in the fresh air and under current weather conditions. A roofing mechanic can always gage their accomplishments at the days end.

Tacking it down

Learning the trade of steep-slope roofing.
You can get a head start by studying math or enrolling in shop classes in your school to develop skills in the general aspects of carpentry. The general duties of a steep-slope roofing mechanic quite often entail many of the same skills needed by a general construction carpenter. Some of the skills needed are the ability to read a tape measure and knowledge of how to use hand tools properly. A steep-slope roofing mechanic should also possess an above average sense of balance as well as good physical agility.

For individuals who find pleasure in heights, climbing, and physical exertion, this trade is ideal! The United Brotherhood of Carpenters apprentice training program for roofing mechanics offers extensive training in ergonomics, fall protection, job safety, O.S.H.A. regulations, scaffold/ladder regulations and safety, proper tool handling, and intensive training in the installation of various roofing materials and related flashings and accessories.

Safety first

Training Adds Up
The rewards of apprenticeship training are the good wages and benefits you receive as a union member. You’ll be working under the protection of a union contract that enables you to become eligible for health insurance, a pension and an annuity.
